College Football's winningest programs
Anyone that knows me knows that I love stuff that involve keeping track of records. I am completely enamored with things of this nature, and keeping track of the winningest programs in College Football is one of them.
So, let's take a look at the top programs and how things stand.
For one, it's not very often that someone in the top ten gets jumped. These teams are obviously very good, and keep winning so they are hard to catch. There is also decent gap between all the teams in the top ten for the most part.
Michigan is the all time winningest program with 876 wins, holding a 40-win lead.
One team that had seen its gap shrinking for the last few years is Notre Dame. The Irish have been average while Texas continues to have season of double digit wins. Well, when last season ended, Texas caught Notre Dame and passed the Irish by one win. Both teams have four wins this year, so Texas still lead the Notre Dame by one win for second all time. Expect the Longhorns to stay ahead of Notre Dame for quite a while.
Another close race sees Penn State and Alabama tied for sixth place with 804 wins. The Nittany Lions came into the season up one win, but Alabama is 5-0 and Penn State is 4-1. Those two teams could flip flop over the years.
I wouldn't count on Tennessee falling out of the top ten any time soon, but I would expect USC to catch the Volunteers. The Trojans have been gaining ground for a while now and are now just eight behind the Vols for ninth place.
It's funny to see how Florida, with 640 wins, just climbed into the top 25. Give them a few more seasons and they'll keep creeping.
Here's the list:
1. Michigan 876
2. Texas 836
3. Notre Dame 835
4. Nebraska 820
5. Ohio State 811
6. Penn State 804
6. Alabama 804
8. Oklahoma 793
9. Tennessee 778
10. USC 770
Notables: Georgia 726 (11th), LSU 705 (12th), West Virginia & Syracuse 676 (14th), Texas A&M 662 (18th), Virginia Tech 661 (19th), Florida 644 (25th).
