Conference Rankings

Here is how I think the conference rank.
1. SEC

With five teams in the top 16 of our poll this conference is tops. They have the defending champions, and a few teams (Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Tennessee) that would probably do quite well in most other conferences not called the Pac-10.

2. Pac-10

A very close second. Three teams ranked in the top 14, including No. 4 USC. Outside of them, Cal and Oregon this conference has several potential bowl teams like Oregon State, UCLA, Stanford, Arizona State and Arizona.

3. Big 12

Three very stellar teams with Oklahoma, Texas and Oklahoma State, but with a very weak North side of the conference and some pretty bad teams scattered in, they are behind the SEC and the Pac-10.

4. Big Ten

Two top ten teams in Ohio State and Penn State, plus teams that are expected to have good years in Iowa, Illinois and Michigan State. Minnesota, Northwestern and Michigan could also be pretty decent. This conference doesn't wow you outside the top two, but it's fairly solid through the first eight teams or so.

5. Mountain West

That's right, the Mountain West. Utah, TCU and BYU are all ranked in our top 21 and are incredibly talented teams. Air Force and New Mexico are also pretty decent teams.

6. Big East

Nobody in this conference is ranked in our poll, but six of the eight teams in the conference received a vote. Syracuse and Louisville will be bad, but the other teams are pretty solid and it makes it an interesting conference.

7. ACC

Two very good teams with Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech, but after that too much mediocrity, inconsistency and questions.

8. WAC

Had to give the WAC some love. Boise State is great while Nevada, Fresno State and Louisiana Tech are all likely bowl teams.

9. C-USA

Let's make it a top nine. East Carolina, Houston and Southern Miss are all teams that could be ranked at some point.

Stop the madness:
6 bowl-eligible teams
top conference in 4 of 6 bcs computer indexes

Top to bottom a better conference: Pac-10

As for the rankings argument:
Imagine how the top-25 would be affected if SEC teams actually scheduled nine conference games **cough-florida-'bama**cough. Or if the Pac-10 added an extra patsy to the schedule instead of beating up on each other.
