Non-BCS preview

So it's time to get rid of the term "this year's Boise State."
The fact of the matter is Boise State, and teams a lot like the Broncos, are going to be good every year.
Every single season there is a non-BCS team that deserves to be in the discussion as far as the best teams in the country.
From Utah of last year and 2005, Boise State of 2007 as well as other teams that haven't received the notoriety they deserve, these teams have proven they can play with just about anyone.
This year will have some interesting story lines from conferences such as the WAC and Mountain West.
Let's take a look...
1. Boise State

The Broncos have he best chance of making it to a BCS bowl of all the non-BCS conference teams. Kellen Moore is a very, very efficient passer and Boise State continues to have offensive weapons. They have a big test early with Oregon, but after that any loss would be a huge upset.

2. BYU

The Cougars are probably the second best team talent wise, but a BCS bowl is probably out of the equation because of the schedule. They play Oklahoma right away and have three other ranked teams, two in conference. With Max Hall back at QB they should score a lot of points and the defense returns eight starters.

3. Utah

I'm not ready to move the Utes too far down the list like most others are. They still return some good pieces of a fierce defense and they have a good running back in Matt Asiata. This team is going to compete in the Mountain West and they get a shot at Oregon in the third week.

4. TCU

How good is the Mountain West? With Andy Dalton under center and with good speed on the offensive side, the Horned Frogs will be a tough, tough team. They have some parts to replace on defense and winnable games against big programs in Virgina and Clemson.

5. Notre Dame

As usual, the Irish are far overrated by the national media. So you say they got a good recruiting class? Well, that isn't news it's the status quo and it's equaled nothing. Jimmy Claussen is a decent quarterback at best. If you look at their schedule, they should go 11-1. But they won't, they'll go 8-4 tops. If this team goes 10-2 and makes a BCS bowl, I will have to commit a hate crime.

6. Houston

This team should be very good. Certainly they'll be the class of Conference USA. They have big games against Oklahoma State and Texas Tech, the latter being a chance at a win. Case Keenum (QB), Tyron Carrier (WR) and Bryce Beall (RB) are legit playmakers who could be impact players with nearly any program.

7. Southern Mississippi

This team is always tough. They have a chance at Kansas in week four and should be the top  team in C-USA East. Damion Fletcher is one of the best running backs nobody has heard of. Watch for him to have a big year.

8. Nevada

This team can move the ball with three players returning that have all went over 1,000 yards on the ground in their career. Vai Taua, Colin Kaepernick and Luke Lippincott are the reason that Nevada will be second in the WAC and might give Boise State a horrible game.

9. East Carolina

This team got off to a really hot start last year, and has some key parts returning. They have a chance to get a big win right away, playing West Virginia in week two and North Carolina in week three. They get Virginia Tech later in the year as well.

10. Louisiana Tech

This is the third WAC team in the top ten, and it's not Fresno State. This team went 8-5 last year, won a bowl game and has a very good running back in Daniel Porter. They have a chance to announce themselves early with a win over Auburn, then they get LSU later.

I think that Notre Dame does improve this year. Hard to imagine then being the fifth best team that isn't in a BCS conference. This is definitely a year that Boise State has a chance to be in a BCS bowl as long as they can get past Oregon on Thursday I don't see them losing a game.
