Who will play Bama or Florida for the National Title?
I never think it's too early to talk
about the National Title picture, and since the BCS standings are all set to
come out in two weeks, let's get a jump on how things look.
Here is what we know for sure: One
of Alabama or Florida will be in the National Title game. Even if one of them
slips up in the regular season, the winner of the SEC title game will get in
and it is more than likely to be one of these two teams.
Alabama has been the most impressive
team we have seen this season and the Crimson Tide, in my opinion, still has
some tests left. South Carolina is no slouch, and then the heated rivalry game
against an improving Tennessee team should be decent. They host LSU on Nov. 7
and then end the year with a trip to Auburn. If Bama comes out of all that unbeaten,
I will be voting them No. 1 heading into the SEC title game.
Florida, the incumbent and most
respected team in the country, has one kinda test left and then a couple games
against decent teams. We don't need to run through it, we just need to acknowledge
that if Florida doesn't go unbeaten, it's a huge shock.
So with it being established that
one of these two teams will be in the National Title game, who are the other
teams with a chance?
The most likely team is Texas. The
Longhorns are the frontrunners to face either Alabama or Florida because all
thehave to do is win. They don't need to have anybody get knocked off, they
just have to have more points on the scoreboard than the other team for the
rest of their remaining games. I guess you could say Texas has some tough games
after Oklahoma this weekend, but at Columbia, at Stillwater, home for Kansas
and at College Station are all games I fully expect them to win. However, there
are possible games that could see them get tripped up.
Who benefits the most if they do?
I think it's the Trojans of USC. I
know Virginia Tech is ahead of them right now, but USC has two big time games
against Notre Dame and Oregon on the road and if they are impressive, voters
will likely move them up. I am also banking on Virginia Tech either losing to
someone they shouldn't, or being very unimpressive which is very, very likely.
I think USC is a team that is going to get better and better.
There are a pair of unbeaten teams
from BCS conferences that have some hurdles to clear and teams to jump, and if
they go unbeaten you better believe they're gonna be jumping up and down about
playing for the National Title. I think the team that would have the most to
say would be Iowa, if the it wins out and Texas loses. If the Hawkeyes win at
the Horseshoe and finish 12-0, they have a legit, legit claim. That is, if
Texas loses. Cincinnati would have less of a claim because they have played a
good schedule, but not great. The Bearcats are going to lose to someone, I can
feel it. So it'll be a moot point.
The least likely of all the teams
with a claim is Boise State, which plays Tulsa tonight in the last possible
game it could lose. 12-0 is a virtual lock for the Broncos with a win tonight,
and they need to be very, very impressive in winning to have any chance. As
USC, VT, Iowa, etc... keeps winning against their conference foes and Boise State
is beating Hawaii and New Mexico State, the Broncos will fall.
Miami, LSU, TCU, Ohio State, Oregon
and Penn State (and a few others) would need a lot of help to get back into the
discussion and we can cross that bridge if we happen to get there.

I would have to say I think that Virginia Tech has the upper hand of the teams outside of the top three. They are already ranked higher than all the others, they have an easier schedule and play teams that people still kinda hold in some high regard. I think the Hokies have a good chance but that chance is hurt if Alabama loses. VT won't get the votes to go play if Bama loses since the Tide beat them already.
Steve-O,
Could we get an SEC scoring update.
Have you enjoyed watching all those vaunted SEC QBs light up the southern skies in 13-3 shootouts. I know I have.
The SEC has had plenty of high scoring games as I already put in one post and they have had a few more. Sure, the defenses are way better and the quarterbacks ahda a bad week this week. Still the best confoerence with quarterbacks that are better than you think.
